This is a selection from work I’ve made over the last year or so. Some pieces fit comfortably into the various series presented elsewhere on my website, so you will also see them in their context on other pages. Much of this new work, though, comes from a place of mystery, and results from playful exploration of ‘gel plate’ printing. ‘What is gel printing?’ I can hear you asking, and here’s a brief explanation.
Paint is applied in myriad ways – roller, brush and stencil to name a few – to a clear, springy but firm, reusable, jelly-like slab available in many different shapes and sizes. When paper is firmly pressed on top, the paint transfers easily on to the paper which is then ‘pulled’ – peeled off – and hey presto, you have a print, which can either be developed further, or used for collage.
I really enjoy the variety and flexibility of monoprinting like this. Quick, energetic, immediate, it suits my personality, and provides endless possibilities. The loose, free and sometime unexpected results allow me the opportunity and challenge of asking ‘Do I like this? What shall I do with it? Is it a finished item, or shall I overprint – or tear it up and start a collage?’ On this page, you can see many varied answers to that question.
