The ‘Seasons’ series started after an autumn walk in the country on a crisp day in late November. There were leaves of all hues floating down from the trees in Westonbirt arboretum and a further quilt of colour on the forest floor – it was a superb mixture of colours, a blend of the bright and the subdued, demanding abstract treatment in some buttery oil paint. By contrast the flowers and leaves in ‘Summer in Norfolk’ demanded a more representational treatment to do justice to the colour and pattern all around me in the sunshine.
